How to create a transparent PNG
A transparent PNG has no background at all — the empty area shows whatever is behind the image. Editors draw a checkerboard pattern to say "nothing here". Transparent PNGs are what make logos, stickers and overlays composite cleanly onto any surface.
First: why your image can't be a JPEG
JPEG compression simply has no alpha channel. Every JPEG has a baked-in background, usually white. To get transparency you must end with PNG (or WebP). If your file is .jpg, the background is already destroyed — go back to the original photo.
Method 1: AI cutout tool (recommended)
- Open the CutOutLab workspace and upload your photo.
- The AI erases the background and keeps your subject with real alpha transparency.
- Download — you get a PNG with the empty areas genuinely transparent, ready for Figma, Canva, CapCut or print.
Method 2: Canva
Background Remover is a Canva Pro feature: select the image → Edit photo → BG Remover. Download as PNG with "transparent background" checked. Works, but requires a paid plan.
Method 3: GIMP (free desktop)
Layer → Transparency → Add Alpha Channel, then use Select by Color or Foreground Select to delete the background, and export as PNG. Precise but slow — minutes per image.
Check your work
- Open the PNG on a colored background — the "empty" areas should show that color, not white.
- If the corners are white, the tool exported JPEG-style transparency. Re-export as PNG.
- Halos around edges? The original photo had a busy background — an AI cutout with alpha matte usually fixes it.
